Our journey

Since our founding in 2014, our work — co-created with survivors and clinicians — has led to close collaborations with primary care units and psychiatric clinics, universities as well as government funding to advance method development and knowledge-sharing within public healthcare.

These experiences have been both inspiring and formative. They have shown us what is possible — and what still needs to change — strengthening our commitment to contribute to the development of more effective and inclusive, knowledge-based care.

Patients come to us because they do not fit within standard treatments and have often been labeled as “treatment-resistant.”

In 2025, we chose to take the next step. Not to expand our clinic further — but to focus on sharing knowledge more widely. Because the need is great, and the gap between what is needed and what is available remains too wide. So now we reach out to practitioners everywhere — and invite them to be part of the change.

To go beyond symptoms — toward care that is individualized, precise, and grounded in a deeper understanding. We believe knowledge must be allowed to move and shared freely — across all nations. That is why we teach, share, and empower.

Our organisation

WONSA is a foundation and research clinic.

SAIS: Within our framework

At the heart of our work is a commitment to understanding the full impact of sexual abuse — and to build clear pathways to healing. SAIS (Sexual Abuse Injury Syndrome) is the backbone of our framework, an injury-based approach, bringing together more than 10 years of clinical research and survivor-informed insight — covering the full continuum of injury, from stress reactions, PTSD and CPTSD to DID — moving beyond symptoms to root causes and real healing.

What we hold true

We believe in a world free from sexual abuse.

Guiding principles

Knowledge - Through experience, observations, insight and integrity we build and spread knowledge.

Courage - We talk about what we see, creating opportunity and breaking ground when necessary.

Compassion - For us, compassion is a responsibility — to consistently choose approaches that are both effective and gentle, for survivors in need.

Discernment - the ability to distinguish healing from symptom management, to recognize what works.

Our vision

Our vision is our name: a world of no sexual abuse.

Our mission

Our mission is to develop and spread knowledge that facilitates healing from all forms of sexual abuse, and drives positive societal change, all around the world.

Essence

Simplicity, clarity, manifesting love that gives hope.

Foundation

Integrity, observation & experience is our foundation.

at Aftonbladet’s Swedish Heroes Gala — recognizing WONSA’s work to

advance care for survivors of sexual abuse, on their terms.

WONSA’s founder, Gita Rajan, was awarded the 2016 Human Entrepreneurship Award — recognizing WONSA’s pioneering work and entrepreneurial commitment to supporting survivors of sexual abuse.

Our history

2014

WONSA was founded in Stockholm, Sweden

On December 12, 2014, Gita Rajan — physician and survivor of childhood sexual abuse — founded the WONSA Foundation, driven by a vision to make knowledge-based healthcare accessible to survivors, on their terms. Early on, WONSA brought Lifespan Integration founder Peggy Pace to Stockholm and facilitated the certification of the first three therapists in Sweden trained in the method — opening the door to new treatment possibilities and research.

2015 - 2017

In 2015, WONSA recognized the severity of trauma-related injuries among those seeking help. In response, physicians were added to support the clinic’s therapists in Stockholm’s Old Town, and WONSA established its

first collaboration with a primary care center. In 2016, WONSA was recognized for its innovative work with the Reach for Change prize for social entrepreneurship, as well as the HM Entrepreneurship Award. In 2017, WONSA published its first scientific article and conducted its first treatment study in collaboration with Karolinska Institutet.

2018 - 2020

WONSA signed its first contract with a regional psychiatric healthcare provider. Our clinical work was presented for the first time at an international scientific congress. In 2019, WONSA published its second scientific article. That same year, WONSA contributed to the program on sexual violence at the International

World Congress of Women Doctors in New York, with Gita Rajan as a featured speaker. Through a grant from the Ruth and Richard Julin Foundation, neurofeedback was introduced into clinical practice. In 2019, WONSA’s work was also recognized when Gita Rajan was named

Healthcare Hero of the Year at Aftonbladet’s Swedish Heroes Gala — honoring WONSA’s efforts to advance care for survivors of sexual abuse, on their terms.

2020 - 2021

In 2020, WONSA received 2 million SEK from the Ministry of Health and Welfare to develop national educational materials for Swedish primary

care and psychiatry. The clinic also received government funding for clinical method development and was nominated for CHILD10 and the Golden Wheel. During 2020, WONSA published its third and fourth scientific articles, followed by a fifth publication in 2021. In 2021, WONSA received an additional 3 million SEK to support the dissemination of knowledge about sexual abuse within the healthcare system.

2022 - 2024

In 2022, WONSA received a one-year operational grant of 6 million SEK from the National Board of Health and Welfare — strengthening its capacity to advance knowledge and clinical development within the field. That same year, WONSA initiated its first collaboration with the Swedish Public Health Agency, marking an important step in contributing to national public health efforts.

In 2024, WONSA entered into a unique agreement with Region Stockholm Psychiatry, exploring treatments for survivors with CPTSD and DID as part of the public psychiatric system. The 18-month collaboration offered valuable insight into both the potential and the boundaries of working within existing public structures — informing the new direction that followed.

2025 - 2027

After several years of collaboration within the Stockholm Region, a new direction emerged — maintaining a small independent clinic as a living base for continuous research and knowledge development, and building a global platform for education and collaboration.

Our primary focus remains global, but in April 2026, we were grateful to receive a three-year grant from Arvsfonden — the Swedish state inheritance fund — to adapt the platform to the specific needs of Swedish public healthcare. This work runs alongside our global mission, deepening our roots while we continue to reach outward.
